The "Truth" Comes Out

Tom backs down.

“At—at Belle Catley’s?” Anastasia’s voice rose until it cracked with pain.
“Now it’ll be all over town,” growled Hobbes Junior savagely. “I hope you’re satisfied, Tom. There won’t be a wife in Petesville who’ll speak to her husband tomorrow.”
“Hobbes Junior, I had no idea—” Though he was cold-blooded, the captain was perspiring. “Look here! You take oath they were at—er—at Belle’s?”
“Go ask Belle herself if you don’t believe me. She’ll tell you.” Hobbes Junior replied.
“Hobbes Junior, will you swear on your word as a Gentle Ben?”
“As a Gentle Ben? Sure!”
“Well, I—I apologize, and I—er—well, I am sorry, and um—” The shark spluttered as he turned tailfin towards the door.

That's why I don't get married--so I don't have to figure out a way to get my wife not to speak to me!

Belle Catley is a great name for a lost woman.

Are you on speaking terms with any respectable women now, Dan?

Glad you think so, Doug. It was supposed to be CatLING, like Watling in the eerily similar GONE WITH THE WIND, but I hadn't seen the movie in years (I've never read the book), and I misunderstood the kids when they told me the original Belle's last name.
